Fields at Faraway Farm IV. 11x14, oil on linen panel. 2015.
About 18 months ago I did a series of paintings at Faraway Farm near Upperville, VA. This week I revisited one of those plein air pieces and used it as the basis for a studio painting.
To make it more interesting I re-imagined the composition and worked in a more abstract manner. The color scheme was designed to lend an overall orange/yellow cast to the picture. The darks are a mix of viridian, bright red and cad yellow light. Everything else is painted with ultramarine, bright red, cad yellow light and, occasionally, a dash of burnt umber.
After letting the painting sit for a week I made a few small adjustments to the base of one of the central trees. I resisted making any major changes, for once.
