First Plein Air of the Year

Plein air painting featuring a Russian olive tree, pines and an open grassy field.

This is my first plein air of the 2013 season.

I actually painted this over several days (it's my own back yard, so visiting the location multiple times isn't a problem).  I first made a preliminary sketch then I used it to help develop a more interesting composition and better color selection.  A couple of days later I went back to the same spot and painted the whole thing in one session on a fresh canvas.  After that was dry I re-worked the center of interest, filled out the foreground and pushed the trees on the right further back.

After looking at the painting for a few days back in the studio I decided that the sky was too busy for the scene and repainted it.

"Wild Olive" 14x18 oil on linen.
