Modifying an Existing Painting

A plein air painting with a figure. Extra painting and scumbling done back in the studio

Potomac Blues. 9x12, oil on linen panel. 2014.

Sometimes paintings don't turn out too well and after looking at them in the studio for a few weeks I will often play around with the painting to try out new techniques and approaches.

This is a plein air painting done at Riverside Potomac that I revisited to add new layers via scumbling and glazing.  My goals were to increase the feeling of soft light and bring a feeling of mood by playing on the blue/orange/green colors. I also placed a figure in the painting to give it a strong center of interest.
