Field Study - Discovery Park 052016. 7x11, oil on linen panel. 2016
A productive day, with studies done both in the the studio and out in the field.
This is the afternoon's effort, done en plein air. I spent a lot of time squinting at the scene to help me reduce the detail to a manageable amount. The biggest weakness was in the composition of masses - I spent too much time painting the trees and not enough time getting the picture down to four or five big shapes.
Back in the studio I decided to simplify the sketch a little: I compressed all the darks into one long shape across the top of the panel. The bottom half of the panel was left as is.
