This is a small study I did in advance of trying to tackle a larger (24x20) painting of the same scene. I wanted to see where the main stumbling blocks were going to be and get a feel for the overall difficulty of the painting.
Now that I have it sketched out I have a better sense of where it's lacking, in particular I think I could get more out of the subdued cool light by contrasting it with warmer light somewhere in the painting. To that end I'm going to try leaving the cool foreground and putting some warm light in the background trees.
