Wrigley. 18"x18", oil on linen. 2013.
A commissioned portrait of Wrigley. I took the reference photos on a sunny day in her back yard. She is a very photogenic lady and we had plenty of shots that would have been suitable for a painting. In the end we chose the one that showed off all her best features, especially the ears, eyes and mouth.
I designed the edges to give the painting extra depth and keep the focus on her head. In keeping with a lot of the paintings I've done this year, I used a limited palette of ultramarine blue, viridian (which is where most of the blues actually come from), alizarin crimson, bright red, cadmium yellow light and burnt sienna.
