Chicken Thursday

A portrait of a white chicken seen from the side in a brown-gray setting.

Chicken Thursday. approx. 16" x 16" oil on linen. Unmounted. 2014.

The latest painting off the easel.  It is currently unmounted so there are a few natural hills and valleys in the surface of the linen which you can see in this image.

This is one of the chickens I photographed last weekend at George's Mill. I am particularly fond of all the non-chicken parts of this painting, although they were, by far, the hardest parts to paint.  I established the foreground texture by layering green paint over an impressionistic block in.  The background is a mix of ultramarine, red and yellow - with the proportions of each varied to produce an orange, green or purple bias as required.
